south slope APARTMENT

The major feature of the renovation is the creation of an open plan on the parlor floor (formerly a triple parlor), with a centralized kitchen. We wanted the kitchen to not feel like an encumbrance between the living spaces on either side, and to feel like a natural place to congregate or transition between spaces. We did this by creating an L-shaped peninsula to define the edge of the large living space in the rear, and by locating the tallest millwork pieces toward the front, which creates the feeling of a threshold between the kitchen and dining area. The stair to the garden level is obscured by a slatted wall, in order to bring an element of personality and surprise to the open plan. The project was a collaboration with the Brownstone Boys, you may know it as “Break and Reno”. Photos by Erik Lauchie (@carbonstories).
